How to clean and maintain the lenses and guide rails of the Ortur laser engraving machine

How to clean and maintain the lenses and guide rails of the Ortur laser engraving machine?

My Ortur laser engraving machine maintenance secrets: the transformation from a novice to professional maintenance
"Click--" As the engraving machine suddenly made a strange sound, I stared at the blurred engraving lines in front of me and finally realized that I had made a common mistake made by novices. As a DIY enthusiast who has been in the pit for two years, I naively thought that as long as I bought an Ortur laser engraving machine, I could easily achieve creative freedom. It was not until the engraving accident caused by lens contamination that I really began to pay attention to the importance of equipment maintenance. Today I will share the experience accumulated over the years, hoping to help everyone avoid detours.

Lens cleaning: Guard the light path with microscope-level patience

1. Tool preparation list
Medical absorbent cotton (must be 100% cotton material)
Analytical pure anhydrous ethanol (purity ≥99.7%)
Anti-static PE film gloves (avoid fingerprint contamination)
Low-pressure air blowing (wind pressure ≤0.1MPa)
2. Three-step operation method
The first step is to turn off the power and let it stand for 15 minutes. Remember to unplug the power plug and let the laser module cool down fully. This step is to prevent burns and accidental triggering of the laser. I once tried to operate it right after turning off the machine, and the heat sink was burned with red marks.
Step 2: Remove the lens group. The lens of the Ortur laser engraving machine adopts a screw-on design. You can remove it by gently turning the lens barrel counterclockwise. Here is a little trick: wrap your fingers with medical tape to increase friction, which can easily unscrew the stubborn lens barrel.
Step 3: "Z" cleaning method. First, blow off the surface dust from the side at a 45° angle with an air blower, and then use a small amount of ethanol to wipe the absorbent cotton from the center of the lens in a "Z" shape. Note that you must replace the cotton ball every time you wipe to avoid secondary contamination. I have tried to use ordinary paper towels, but it left fiber marks that are difficult to remove.

Guide rail maintenance: Make mechanical movement as smooth as silk

1. Deep cleaning plan
After work every week, use a bamboo scraper to clean the metal debris in the groove of the guide rail. I found that a bamboo spatula used in the kitchen is very suitable. It will not scratch the surface of the guide rail and can effectively remove stubborn stains. After cleaning, wipe the guide rail with 95% alcohol to remove the residual lubricant and dust mixture.
2. Precision lubrication skills
Lubricant selection: ISO VG 68 grade guide rail oil is recommended. This viscosity lubricant can maintain good lubrication performance at high temperatures. I tried using sewing machine oil, which made the guide rail sticky and the engraving accuracy significantly reduced.
Drip method: drip a drop of lubricant every 10cm along the length of the guide rail, and then manually push the slider to reciprocate 5 times to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate into the ball screw. Note that it must be operated in the off state to avoid motor malfunction.

Three golden rules for daily maintenance

1. Environmental control
Humidity management: Place the equipment in an environment with a humidity of 40%-60%. A hygrometer is a must-have tool. I was in the rainy season in the south, and the humidity exceeded the standard, causing slight rust on the guide rail.
Temperature monitoring: The working environment temperature should be controlled between 15-30℃. When it exceeds 35℃, the laser power will drop by more than 20%. It is recommended to equip a small industrial fan to assist in heat dissipation.
2. Consumables management
Smoke exhaust system: The smoke exhaust pipe needs to be cleaned every 50 hours of work. When I used an endoscope to check, I found that a thick layer of tar-like substances accumulated on the inner wall of the pipe. It is recommended to use it with activated carbon filter cotton to extend the life of the fan.
Cooling water replacement: Pure water should be replaced once a week in summer, and it can be extended to two weeks in winter. Remember to add a small amount of antifreeze to the water (the proportion does not exceed 5%) to prevent ice from damaging the laser tube.
3. Regular calibration
Use a standard test board to calibrate the optical path every month, focusing on checking the verticality of the X/Y axis. I once deformed the engraving pattern due to a slight offset of the guide rail, and it was restored to normal after recalibration. It is recommended to download special calibration software that can automatically generate adjustment parameters.

Common Problems Handbook

1 Stubborn stains on the lens

When encountering stubborn resin stains, you can prepare a mixed solution of ethanol and ether (ratio 3:1). Dip a cotton ball in it and gently press the stain surface for 30 seconds. After it dissolves, clean it according to the usual method. But be careful that this method can only be used twice a year to avoid damaging the coating layer.

2. Abnormal noise on the guide rail

If you hear a "squeaking" sound, it is likely caused by the failure of the lubricant. At this time, the guide rail should be thoroughly cleaned and replaced with new lubricant. If the noise persists, check the tension of the synchronous belt. Press the middle of the belt with your fingers, and there should be an elastic deformation of 5-8mm.

3. Decreased engraving accuracy

In this case, first check whether the lens is clean, and then measure the straightness of the guide rail. I used a high-precision micrometer to measure and found that the guide rail was bent by 0.02mm. The problem was solved by fine-tuning the guide rail fixing screws.

Words from the heart for novices

I remember that when I successfully engraved a clear wooden seal for the first time, I was as excited as a child. But what really makes me feel satisfied is that I can keep this Ortur laser engraving machine in peak condition through systematic maintenance. Now, before starting the machine every time, I habitually check the lens and guide rails. This sense of ritual is like a knight wiping his sword before going to battle.
